aekwondo coach Peter Johnson, who trained para-world champion Amy Truesdale, believes Stoke-on-Trent has a rich sporting heritage, but questioned the city council’s commitment to promoting sport.
The 59-year-old, from Sneyd Green, said: “They’ve talked about closing Northwood Stadium before, and now they’re going to be moving sports facilities to a trust.
“I think the opportunity of London 2012 was missed.
“But Stoke-on-Trent does have a great sporting legacy, right from Stanley Matthews. Northwood Stadium has produced loads of great athletes, like Steve Lewis and Ashleigh Nelson – and the city has a long history with cycling as well.”
